a Poetry Performance Series
directed by Helen Huettner and Mariah Muehler
featuring resident Artist Molly Rabuffo
original performances June 5th, July 8th, and August 5th, 2018
encore summer 2019
Each Girlhood performance showcased 7 female/female identifying poets and two singer songwriters for an hour of original work under the overarching theme of women’s coming of age narratives.
A portion of Girlhood’s proceeds went to Living Well, a Hell’s Kitchen outreach program that seeks to assist women who have experienced the joint traumas of domestic violence and homelessness.
"Music is poetry and poetry is music; Girlhood beautifully integrated both art forms, and I was honored to serve as the Resident Artist for this summer series. I was thrilled to share my own original music, but even more inspired by facilitating the collaboration between fellow female singer-songwriters. We worked together to bring each other's visions to life, to be shared with the empowering Girlhood community. Each performance, I was deeply moved by the words of the poets and the energies of the other musicians. I always left feeling inspired to tell more stories and listen to the stories of the women around me on a daily basis. The rooftop wine receptions offered opportunities to connect with other artists and audience members, ending the night in style with the New York City skyline and a celebration of the female experience."
